Ski resorts across Austria are set to open ahead of schedule
this year thanks to an unseasonably early snowfall across the country.
With an average fall of 1.5 metres last week, conditions are still
favourable at -12 degrees centigrade at 2000 metres and -22 at
3000metres on the Hintertux Glacier in the Ziller Valley.
Hochfugen is the first resort in the area to welcome visitors
for skiing with the season kicking off last weekend (17th November)
and opening full time form 23rd November. Mayrhofen is also
open at the weekends and is scheduled to open full time from 1st
December.
Nina Hasinski of family run British company Redpoint (www.redpoint.co.uk),
who have been based in the area for 12 years, reports that such
early opening is unusual in the resorts. “We very rarely
see everything up and running in November,” she comments. “Although
people can ski on the Hintertux Glacier all year round, the resorts
lower down rarely open full time before early December. This is
a sign that, with the recent snowfall, conditions are ideal for
skiing. It’s a fantastic start to the season.”
Flights are currently cheaper as the season is not yet in full
swing, making now the perfect time to book a week off work and
catch some great skiing and snowboarding at bargain prices.
